Many brides wonder if they want to wear flowers as hair accessories on their wedding day or not. Again and again I hear the wish that it would be nice to use flowers that are also intended for the bridal bouquet or the table decoration.
But is everything actually equally suitable or is there something to consider?
Yes, but quite a bit!
Overview
Flowers as hair accessory:
Teil 1: Part 1: applications & basic considerations
Teil 2: Part 2: Flower selection, stability & alternatives
Which is an adorable idea at first can become a disaster on the wedding day. It is very disappointing when the bride has to admit that the result does not work as she imagined …
No question – many florists creat wonderful flower arrangements and are true masters of their craft.
But that is exactly the problem.
Often their creations are not suitable to be worn for a longer time. And often it’s not considered how to attach the piece or what it’s like to wear them all day long.
Negative examples from my practice
Here are some of the least suitable creations from my work as a bridal stylist:
A flower wreath
- with too short bands to close …
- not adapted to the head and therefore much too big …
- with too large selected flowers …
A floral arrangement on a hair comb
- which was designed much too long and had similarities with a horn…
- so lush & heavy that it was hard to pin …
- so big that it has covered the details of the hairstyle …
Single flowers
- with soft wire instead of the steamens and could hardly be used in the hairstyle …
- „Crumb flowers” which have falling to pieces at the slightest contact…so lush & heavy that it was hard to pin …
- huge bloomed roses, instead of small rosebuds …
There are a few things to keep in mind, that the dream of beautiful floral hair jewelry not burst:
What questions do you have to ask yourself in advance?
What should be the focus, the hairstyle or the flowers?
How do you want to wear the hair? (down/ half-down / pinned-up)
How big or small should be the flower hair jewelry?
Do you want to wear single flowers & leaves, a wreath or a arrangement?
How should the flowers be attached or how should the floral hair ornaments be worn?
How heavy may the arrangement or the wreath be? (sensitive people or migraine-patients beware!
How long do you want to wear the flower hair accessories?
Would you like to be able to remove the flower hair accessory during the celebration?
What are the options?
You can use flowers in the form of:
- Single or loose combined flowers
- Flower wreaths
- Flower arrangements
Single or loose combined flowers
Flower stems can usually be shortened easily and then stuck into the hairstyle according to personal taste. In this way, different types of flowers can be combined and if necessary, the flowers can be thinned out a little.
Styling examples:
Flower wreaths
For a wreath, different flowers & amp; leaves or other green are connected. They are tied in a closed or half circle. Everything is represented from subtle to lush. You can choose a flower type or put together a combination.
These variants are used:
- completely tied and already closed
- completely tied, but to close with ribbons or wire
- half tied and fastened with hairpins
Considerations for the bride:
How should the flower wreath be worn?
(on the head like a crown / on the back of the head on or under the hairstyle)
What should happen to the tapes?
(open to see / hidden)
Tips for ordering flowers:
- If the floral wreath is completely tied tell your florist / your florist necessarily your head circumference! But even with open wreaths, it is important that the size fits you.
- Especially with lush or heavy wreaths , it is helpful if the florist incorporates hairpins or lugs, so hairpins can be used later for stabilization. In any case I would recommend to choose light and small flowers.

Flower arrangements
There are countless design options for a floral arrangement. Flowers and green are usually firmly connected and fixed on a hair comb. Alternatively, the florist can only work with one wire, the two ends of which can then be entwined at the back of the head.
Considerations for the bride:
How do you want to wear the floral arrangement?
(on the side / on the back of the head and more in the middle or on the side)
Tips for ordering flowers:
Maybe it makes more sense if the floral arrangement consists of 2 parts?
